A Day At the Village At Gulfstream Park - Who Said You Can't Have It All?

The first thing I always thought of when my friends talked about Gulfstream Park was a day at the races. And that in itself is exciting and fun. Just think.... watching world-class thoroughbred horses racing around the track, up-close and personal. Placing your bets and cheering for your day's pick to win as you experience the invigorating adrenaline rush when it nears the finish line. Not a bad way to spend a Sunday afternoon at all.

But after spending a day at the Village at Gulfstream Park,  now I know it is so much more than that. Enter the outstanding dining venues and great entertainment night spots to spend with family, friends or significant others, and you've got a whole-day affair. We had the opportunity to do just that a couple of weeks ago and it was truly a fantastic time.  So much so that we are already planning a return trip with a group.

We started our day sitting at the racetrack watching the horses race. While the spot was generally quiet in between races, it would get full of people when the countdown for the next one began. Everyone was very excited as they heard the position of their horse and whether they were going home a little richer.

After a couple of hours, we headed downstairs for dinner. We made a detour through the casino and tried our luck on a couple of the slot machines. Between you and I, we didn't win any money, but we sure had some fun losing it.  A few minutes and a couple of bills later, we walked into the legendary Christine Lee's, an Asian-inspired restaurant offering everything from succulent prime sirloin, to innovative sushi rolls and dumplings.

Christine Lee's family-owned Chinese-American steakhouse goes back to 1959 in northern New Jersey. It has had several homes throughout the years here in Miami and has been a staple for many celebrities (just think Lucille Ball and Don Rickles). Mary Lee, the current owner and daughter of the founder, is an absolute delight whose passion for her restaurant and customers is evident with every story she tells about the place and every memory she recalls.

You definitely want to order the Spare Ribs when you go. As Mary Lee was proud to share, it is the hook for her loyal customers. No need to explain why. We were literally licking the bones - they were so good. And it's no wonder the Prime Sirloin Steaks there are world famous. Juicy, tender and packed with flavor, they are a must-have.

The menu also features a large selection of sushi rolls and other favorites so there is something for everyone. As you're moving from course to course, be sure to sample some of their cocktails. We especially enjoyed the Mango Mojito and the Mai Tai.  I do have to give you one piece of advice.... leave room for dessert. We had the Chocolate Lava Cake and that was one explosion we welcomed with excitement.

Because there is so much to do at the Village at Gulfstream Park and the night was young, we ended our evening over at PlugIN Karaoke. I highly recommend giving your vocal cords a run for their money here. It is such a fun spot. Just imagine a series of private karaoke rooms where you can sing (or yell if you're me) to your heart's desire.

It's an amazing place to come with your friends, coworkers, families or a significant other that isn't going to be turned off by your singing skills while you just let loose with a couple of cocktails (necessary) and a mic. The decorations are awesome and they have room for everything from an intimate group of a few to an over 100 person soiree. I can't wait to return for an exciting time with the peeps. Who knows? Maybe American Idol will hear about my unique way of singing to the oldies (you should hear my rendition of I Will Survive).

If you're looking for a place with a variety of entertainment and food and drink options, Gulfstream Park is where you want to be. For more information, visit them here.

Gulfstream Park is located at 901 S. Federal Highway, in Hallandale Beach.
